Lack of WebKit webview support in Apple’s tvOS poses problems for porting many apps that use webviews to display web widgets and pages (Daniel…

The new Apple TV ’s operating system —  tvOS  — has some differences from iOS 9, but one of the most startling ones is the removal of support for webviews. These are used throughout the industry for a wide range of purposes, the most obvious of which is to a display a website from within your app. Our friend, the Webview… Webviews are found on every major platform out there: OS X, iOS, Android, Windows, linux, etc. Generally speaking, most major browsers, such as Safari and Chrome are applications built around a webview. The menus and buttons let you change interact with the app, navigate to different sites, etc, but the actual heavy lifting of the browser, i.e., showing you what’s on daringfireball.net, are rendered in the main content pane of the app in an embedded webview. …is MIA Webkit is the framework that Apple uses to allow developers to include webviews in their apps. UIWebview, a UIKit class, provides a simple way to do so. Both of these are missing from tvOS. Even though the classes exist to fetch a page from a remote site, nothing else is really there — the content has to be parsed, the DOM has to be built, and the actual HTML has to be rendered and styled, and any embedded Javascript has to be run. There’s no mechanism for doing any of these things, or for presenting the web page to the users. Okay, so what does that mean? No internet browsing If you’re looking at Twitter, and someone you follow posts a link, you can click on it and the app will create a webview, load the link in the webview, and show it to you. You get to check out links quickly without ever having to leave the apps.

Welcoming Developers to Windows 10 (Terry Myerson/Blogging Windows)

Today, I had the honor of speaking to thousands of our development partners at the Build conference about our plans to make Windows 10 the most attractive development platform ever. It is always thrilling to see so many developers excited about Microsoft – and this year, about Windows 10. If you weren’t able to attend or watch it live, you can watch the keynote here later this afternoon once it’s posted. Windows 10 on One Billion Devices Today we shared our bold goal –to see Windows 10 on one billion devices within two to three years of Windows 10’s availability – the first platform version, in any ecosystem, to be available on one billion devices. We will accomplish this by delivering Windows 10 with a free upgrade offer , making it easy for customers and businesses to upgrade quickly, and with great new devices (which we haven’t discussed yet ). Windows Store for Consumers, Businesses, and Developers Today, we shared more details on what the Windows Store will offer to end-users, businesses, and developers. Developers will be able to write an application once and distribute it to the entire Windows 10 device family, making discovery, purchasing and updating easy for customers. For end-users, apps in the Windows Store will install and uninstall easily, and the Store will support a range of global payment methods on all Windows devices – including the largest carrier billing footprint of any ecosystem, supporting 90 carriers, to help people around the world who don’t have credit cards, but do have phones. For businesses, the Windows Store enables admins to highlight apps for their employees, distribute select apps from the Windows Store and private line-of-business apps to their employees, and use business payment methods like purchase orders. For developers, we announced several new capabilities coming to Windows 10: Carrier billing across all Windows 10 devices, which from our phone experience, increases purchases in emerging markets by 8x Updated Windows 10 Microsoft Advertising SDK with support for video ads and install tracking In-app purchase subscription support New Windows Store Affiliate Program Universal Windows Platform Innovation With the Universal Windows Platform, developers can now create a single application for the full range of Windows 10 devices. The platform’s UX controls automatically adapt to different screen sizes, and the developer can then tailor applications to unique capabilities of each device

Medium now has four branded-content partnerships, is looking to fund more content creators; comScore measures about 3M monthly uniques (Lucia…

Medium was created by Twitter’s founders, gets contributions from notables like Water Isaacson and Elon Musk, and has blogging tools writers love. But being a media darling only gets you so far. So in recent weeks, the 2-year-old blogging platform has taken steps to make the platform friendlier to short-form writers and pay some contributors. And in a signal it’s getting serious about making Medium a profitable business, it just poached Vox Media’s advertising lead Joe Purzycki to be its head of partnerships. Medium has four branded-content partnerships under its belt, including one with Marriott , and wants to do more of them, said Edward Lichty, head of corporate development and strategy at Medium. Beyond offering writers unique URLs, he said, Medium is looking at the possibility of funding content creators, and expanding the brand partnerships is a first step. “Our vision is that Medium becomes a place where their content can be funded,” he said. “Long term, we need to be able to fund content creators with a variety of revenue.” Medium also has hired a handful of professional journalists including Steven Levy, Jonathan Shecter and Mark Lotto to oversee its own content channels. But all along, it has seen the vast majority of the content coming from outside contributors, an egalitarian free-for-all. With the line between platform and publisher becoming increasingly blurred, Medium affirmed it’s the former. The Medium-owned channels serve to provide a road map for the independent contributors and occasionally to amplify their posts by publishing them on those channels. “The thing they are doing is help us figure out how to make Medium valuable to publishers,” Lichty said. “I don’t know of any other platform where publications are being launched and pulling content from the platform.” In one example, Backchannel published Medium post “A Teenager’s View on Social Media” by Andrew Watts, a 19-year-old college student, and when the piece took off on Backchannel, Levy made Watts a regular contributor
